The idea for the new crossing has long been discussed among community members as needed for additional connectivity in the area locally and regionally. The Chamblee Doraville Community Improvement District (CDCID) developed an initial analysis in 2022 that documented the need and what opportunities exist for the crossing. This current feasibility study takes the idea one step further to develop specific location, concepts, and preliminary costs.

The crossing can be funded through a mix of local, state and federal funds. The exact funding sources will be determined once the concept design is approved and the project is included in the regional transportation improvement program (TIP) or funded through local sources.

If the project is funded though the regional TIP, implementation may take several years, as the project must be designed, permitted and let to construction. Once the project has completed design, environmental permitting, right-of-way purchases, utility relocations, and any other necessary permits, construction is estimated to last 1-2 years.

This feasibility study will wrap up at the end of December. At that point, the cities of Chamblee and Doraville, along with the CDCID, will coordinate on a decision whether to move the project forward to the next phase of design. That would include additional tasks like traffic analysis, environmental studies, construction plan development, and more public involvement.
